We all want to wake up smelling like we've been in a bed of violets all night, but most of us wake up to a less pleasant scent. Or we have such sloshing armpits after exercise that a random passerby turns their head away.
No one wants to be a walking scent fest. And so we use deodorants and antiperspirants en masse (the latter product tries to block 'sweating' entirely). All we seem to have forgotten is that the body is naturally supposed to sweat . Most deodorants disrupt this natural process. Fortunately, there are also natural alternatives that do not suppress the natural sweating process and still smell nice.
In this blog we specifically discuss a major nasty in deodorants: aluminum. Of course we will also show you an alternative.
Why do you want to avoid aluminum in deodorants?
By adding the metal aluminum to deodorants, sweat cannot escape through the sweat glands and your armpits remain dry. The most common variant that you see in deodorants is aluminum chlorohydrate. Unfortunately, aluminum is not a sweetheart. Various studies have shown that aluminum in deodorants may be hormone disruptive and carcinogenic, and may be harmful to the nervous system. It is also worrying that women who use deodorants containing aluminum may be more likely to develop breast cancer. Because deodorants are applied near the breast and often contain harmful ingredients, some scientists have suggested a link between deodorant use and breast cancer. Not enough research has yet been done to conclusively conclude that there is a link between the health problems mentioned and the use of aluminum-containing deodorants. However, there appears to be sufficient evidence that people with reduced kidney function prefer not to use aluminum-containing deodorants, because the body cannot properly filter out the aluminum. We are in favor of more research, but in the meantime we rely on common sense not to apply heavy metals to the skin every day.
Which deodorant does not have aluminum?
In the past we didn't know any better. Moreover, for years we have been inundated with great commercials in which sexy sports people spray themselves with spray deodorants with a blissful smile. We now know that many of these types of 'promoted' deodorants are harmful to us (if you were not yet convinced of the importance of a natural deodorant, hopefully you will be after reading this blog!). What are the alternatives?
We are fans of this deodorant stick from PRETTY FRANK .
The PRETTY FRANK deodorant stick is without aluminium. But there is more good news. It is also free from t alk, parabens, phthalates and synthetic fragrances. We researched every ingredient in this deo stick (including checking whether they were on an authoritative list, such as the SIN LIST or the RED LIST) and found nothing strange.
The second deodorant without aluminum that we recommend is this deodorant cream from ECO ROOTS .
This deodorant cream from ECO ROOTS is one of the best natural deodorants we have come across and we feel confident in recommending it. Free from aluminum, parabens, phthalates, sulfates and other nasties.
